I went on a McCarthy binge a few years ago. I love his boldness and fearless honesty. Blood Meridian is astonishing. Ridley Scott tried to adapt it into a movie and finally gave up, saying its savagery was unfilmable. He's right. Take the poetry out of the story, reduce it to a bare narrative and its relentless violence would be pornographic.

It's the poetry of his writing I find so engaging. There's a compulsive rhythm to it that sweeps one along. Haven't read one of his for a while, must correct that.

Depends on the art. If someone posted a sample of McCarthy under another name I would tell that person it's important for a writer to be understood more than earning style points.

Art isn't a 'depends on' but at a certain level, unmistakable. A child will call their drawings art, but that's not art. Rules and traditions and standards do not apply to art. Real art. Suggesting they should infers a naiveté wrt the subject matter. Possibly the lack of intellectual capacity for such discernment.

It's okay though... the Marvel movies need an audience too.

Some people call smearing paint on a canvas art; I prefer art that looks like something.

Pollock made a tidy living "smearing" paint on canvas and a Picasso abstract could pass for a Fellini nightmare. Art, as we know, is subjective, like comedy.

Well, now that this is all settled, I'm going to put on my tweed jacket with the patches on the elbows, pour myself a brandy, light my pipe and read some pretentious literature.

Or I might watch "Swamp People" on the History Channel.

Cheerio!

A few years ago when "The Road" came out, this discussion was all over the place on writing sites. Plenty of people felt like you do.

It just so happens that here and now, the mix isn't in your favor. No one is ganging up on you.

And even if I thought that was happening to me, I'd be too embarrassed to type it out and hit the submit button.

Sheesh.

It's more there are hardly any people here. I can see why.

Because of the mean people expressing a similar opinion at the same time?

Yes, us 'intellectual elitists' are running all the decent folk off.

Come on man! You can't really think that. In fact, I'm pretty sure, you don't.

There are plenty of people here who disagree with one another on a number of topics.

The reasons for this forums decline are many, but one small group chasing off the larger bulk of the rest is not one of them.

Yeah, and to be honest, I don't think it will ever be what it once was.

I don't really care about that. There isn't much I can do about it.

I'm just a medium sized fish. The big fish still come around once in a while. I'm a place holder.

Intellectuals? Here? Oh, now and then a spark of inspiration pops up but then the poster quickly follows it by claiming the earth is flat and the holocaust was a hoax and some men prefer women with small boobs.

Editors note: Research has determined that women with small boobs have no gag reflex. Evolution wins out.

Is that the same research that proved men who make sexist jokes on internet fora have very small penises?

I wouldn't know. I leave such assumptions to those that spend an inordinate amount of time on penis sites.

It is Saturday 9 am here in South Florida bluewpc and my wife and I are gearing up for a day at the range and I have logged in to once again thank you for precipitating a mornings entertainment and even if this is the day some errant loosed newbie round leaks me I will go off grinning knowing the state of mankinds affairs that I have finally escaped.

And what the hell this long ago ceased being a country for old men like me.

@NP one should perform a study on how long on average it takes for a forum thread to devolve into a polemic about Hitler's penis

...and there you go, pollocking the thread.

Or maybe that happened earlier.

(See the Urban Dictionary; "Pollock #4")

Just watched my gazzillionth Hitler doc.

In every reenactment, no matter what the situation, he's always screaming and pounding his fists.

Do you think that's how he ordered his food in a restaurant?

Maybe he was compensating for his tiny penis. Oh yeah, that and he was a psychopath.

Psychopaths with tiny penes are the worst.

Say... Trump has small hands...
