Default 5 initial posts?

Why do we have to post 5 times before we can post on any of the writing forums? It seems silly and counter-intuitive.

And you seem to be over-posting throughout the forums, lizariedel.

It's because a lot of critiquers will critique members who they know. So we like to ask that you get to know members first. It's just a common courtesy. One that we feel is important as a community.

On some sites it is 10 or even more. On one writing site, posts like this one that some newcomers make just to reach the required post count are deleted so they don't count.

In addition to what Whiskers said, I think the requirement also encourages people to get to know the place and understand where to post and how things work before they post a story or poem. It seems like common sense to me, and I'm surprised that new members simply don't take it as an opportunity to make a good first impression.

I assume it's to prevent people that just join writing forums to have their work critiqued.

There is that, as nobody likes a one post wonder (someone who joins, post one item of work, and never comes back, even if they get feedback). It also stops any spambots/spammer from flooding the forum with ads/spam as they cannot start threads in most of the forum at the beginning.

Admittedly here we now get the six post wonder, but they are rare and far between, as new members who want to stick around will do so regardless and those that would be one post wonders don’t bother.

A nice side effect, from our point of view, of the five post rule is that it helps new members to get to know the forum a bit better and get their bearings.

I only just joined and I think it's a great idea.
If you just let people post straight away, they might not know how to do it and stops spammers, like you said.
I was wondering about it, so thanks!

You don't need five posts to be able to make a thread in Introductions, it's the exception

Icon7 Five is an incomplete number

There was a conference in Galwrst.

You know, Galwrst is the place we call Fairyland, but their inhabitants hate this last name.

Most of the Fairies were nonplussed by the choosing of 5 posts in The Writer's Beat forum as the key to open the Pearled Doors to Writers Heaven.

«How come», -they asked one another, -«If you can choose perfect numbers as 3, or 7, or even 11! Why this... this... misconception of taking a 5 as a selection?»

«-Maybe it is because they have five fingers?,»[/i] -Bott the mathematician risked an opinion, of course, nobody deigned to answer him.

Titania the Queen, spoke with her usual soft learned voice:

«-Let's send Elf (the little and dark sprite into the mind of Odliam, so he can get some knowledge about this matter. Odliam has just register in the forum and he will surely find the reason. Meanwhile let's adjourn till Elf could gather some information.»

Everybody accepted the wise advice and went to work as usual waiting for an answer to so important issue.

«-In frantic desperation, I, Odliam am trying to fend Elf off, but it is a lost skirmish, as soon as I could be called a writer I will tell what is happening in my mind, now with a new tenant, besides me!

Himmeldonnerwetter!!

When I am at a lost some long German words comes to mind... I am sorry»

While I'm generally against rules like this one I do understand the need for them.

Of course, I would understand too if the requirement were reduced to four.

Yeah, usually people who just recently register don't know how to give out advice, they need to receive it/need help.

I try to give out praise, find something I like and let the writer know. There are a few areas where people just ask for an opinion on their work or have written an opinion piece that they might want to know someone agrees with. All the action here, multiple stories to read, poems to enjoy, people to know, 4 or 5 posts is just the start to a whole lotta fun! Enjoy!

The five post rule also helps keep spammers out of the forum. Most won't bother if they have to post a bunch of things.

You also cannot send PM's until you have a history. I tried to send a private message to Pandora since we are on another forum together, but it wouldn't allow it.

This is a 'give and take' forum. First you give (5 times) then you can take. Otherwise you'd be a vampire writer just taking.

What's so hard to understand?

I just had another thought.

Counting your first, "I'm here." with "oops." your second as 2 of the 5, of the 5 you need doesn't seem fair to me.

You need to read some work here and make some comments about the work. You need to let us know about you. If I were a moderator that's what I'd be looking for. Of course, I am not a moderator. So I have no idea what they will accept.

I'm looking forward to welcoming you if you ever show up...

Oh, believe me, I re-set members back to zero rather quickly if they're obviously circumventing our 5-post rule. Mwahahahahaha!

You know, it is kind of hard as a new person to decide what to post for those initial posts. I remember thinking that no one would want to know what I thought of their writing because they knew nothing about me.

I'm not suggesting the rule be changed. I'm not really suggesting anything, actually. Just commenting.

That's why we suggest going into the Writers' Cafe or the Board Games and interact. Or say "Hello!" to other new members.

Default Word Count

I have written two short fictional stories that are between 4,000 - 7,000 words.Just wanted to see what you guys think for this forum, are those too long? I will be posting them soon. Thanks.

First . . . why are you asking in this thread, when it's about 5 initial posts and not how long/short posted-up stories should be? *puzzles*

Second, please read the FAQ. The guideline word count is 3,000. Most people don't read much more than that (here) in one sitting, unless the piece is really engaging. Which it (they) might be. Who knows? But if you plan to post up the whole thing, best to put it into the Members Only area to have your first rights protected.

Edit: Aaaaand . . . of course you didn't bother to wait for anyone to reply first. You just went ahead and got your five posts in, then posted up your own work. Well, again, though . . . if you have the whole story up (especially if it's longer than the word count stated in the guidelines), you might want to place it into the Members Only area.
