Default This Question is Bananas!

I have a character trapped in an African jungle, and finds a banana tree. My question...

1) Can he pluck a banana off the tree and eat it, or is it too ripe to consume?
2) Will there be more edible bananas that have fallen on the ground? Do the bananas eventually fall to the ground?

Thanks!

I don't know the answer to either, expect that banana trees are tall and thin and would need to be climbed (and no low hanging branches, more like a palm tree if memory serves).

A easy place to start looking for answers would be: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bananas

Would he risk fruit that's fallen on the ground? What time is this set in? It's just that fallen fruit can come into contact with animal urine and other bug-related illness. There was a case of something a few years back where contaminated fruit that had been picked off the floor killed a few people because it had come into contact with bacteria.

It just depends when this is set and if he'd know about bacteria etc...

Would that happen with bananas? Since you don't eat the outer layer . . . .

Hand to mouth contact etc. He'd have to peel it, lol.

you'd love a banana right about now, wouldn't you? 10 surefire ways to pretend you know a lot about nothing.

from what I've seen bananas on the tree would be too green, but that may just be because they're harvested before they ripen.

I cant see that picking up a banana off the floor and eating it is much of a risk, its sealed in a skin.

When I was in Morocco the rule was never eat fruit that doesn't have to be peeled. Moroccan water isn't clean, contains fecal matter and nasty parasites and bacteria. And fruit is watered with the stuff and washed with it, so you never eat salad, grapes, apples (unless you peel them yourself) etc. Bananas, oranges etc are safe. Oh and never drink anything with ice cubes in it unless you know the barman freezes mineral water.
