Default Dislocated Shoulder

Does anyone have experience with a dislocated shoulder, and how painful it is? How it feels?

After it get's put back in, most action heroes seem to just keep going. Yet it seems like in real life, you need to put it in a sling. It seems to be recommended that you can resume regular activities (but not strenuous ones) after 2 weeks.

If put in dire and life threatening circumstances, could you use it right away, or would the pain be too much?

I might take some writer liberties here, but I don't want to stray too far from reality.

It depends. A separated shoulder is typically more painful than a dis-located shoulder.

A dislocated shoulder. He get's it from being thrown across a canyon, and dislocates it on impact. However I don't want it to be so debilitating that he can't go on with his task.
