Default Free Kindle novel promotion

I signed two of my novels up with Kindle's KDP Select, giving them exclusive e-rights for 3 months. Novel is priced at .99 at 30% royalty. I'm allowed 5 promotion days to give it away free and chose this weekend to start with 3 days. After a day and a half, one has been downloaded 630 times and the other 140. The idea is to see if I can interest readers about me as an author and bring up sales of my other books (all different genres). I'll post about my feelings as the 90 days goes on. Here's the listing for my books on Amazon.

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_no...s=John+bushore

The books:

Necessary Evil, historical coming-of-age story set in World War 2. Tadtaotao, an orphaned native boy lives on the tiny Japanese-held island of Tinian. When the Americans invade, Tad's adoptive mother is horrifically killed and he is thrown into an internment camp. When he uncovers a Japanese spy ring, he is released and "adopted" by an American unit. His devastated island is turned into a massive airbase to be used for firebombing Japan. When a secretive new bomber squadron arrives, Tad notices a few things that put him onto the biggest secret of the war.

The Prisoners of Gender, a bawdy, spicy "rip-off" of the romance genre. A botched spell causes the princess to switch bodies with the captain of her guard. The warrior is sworn to protect her virginity but the princess, in her new body raging with male hormones, wants to try out her new "equipment." No wonder the king is royally pissed.

I'll let you all know how it goes. Take care,

JohnB

Hilarious.
I just saw your book for free on ereadernews
I looked at it but didn't download it. I didn't realize it was satire, but when I saw the gender switch of the rom/com couple, I said, "Now THAT'S not a bad idea."

Yeah, when I got the idea for a gender switch, I realized I could do a "spoof" of the romance genre. But I made sure the situation and story itself were interesting enough to carry the book on it's own.

Besides the main characters, who are interesting because of how they handle the psychological problems of the switch, there's a naive maid-servant who has the hots for the captain, not realizing it's really her mistress. And there's a half-wit giant who loves pretty girls. Even the wizard breaks the mold, he uses smoke-rings from his pipe to cast his spells. It's up to you to decide what he's smoking in that pipe.

During the promotion, 850 copies of Prisoners were given away, 220 copies of Necessary Evil.

First results are in. In the week before the give-away, no copies of Necessary Evil were bought, 2 copies of Prisoners of Gender. In the week following, 2 copies of Necessary Evil and 16 copies of Prisoners of Gender were sold (99 cents, 35% royalty). Still too early to make definite conclusions, but encouraging. I'll update again in a couple of weeks.

The books are still free to "KDP Prime" members, but I'm supposed to get a share of Kindle's profits on the program, where people pay a membership fee to become "Prime."

I thought that "sharing purse" thing was Select, not Prime.
Did you just put it on there, or do a lot of drum-banging?

You should consider at some point proposing an article on this to the WBQ folks. Publishing has gotten so common, it might be nice to see it featured more on WB

You're right, it is KDP Select, not prime. Mental lapses are common for folks my age.

No, I just put them up on KDP with no fanfare other than mentioning on some writing forums that I was trying it as an experment.

Prisoners of Gender was published in 2009 by Eternal Press, but sold little and was dropped by them last year. I re-published it on Amazon, Kindle, and Smashwords and sold only a few, so I decided to try KDP Select. I took it down from Smashwords to comply with Amazon's policies.

Necessary Evil is brand new and has no track record.

I like your site, by the way.

Thanks, John

That's some pretty interesting info, all right. I'm really torn on KDP Select. On the one hand, it seems like I just about have to do it to meet my goals of wealth, power, and corruption. But on the other hand, it's just so evil. The wicked empire amazon trying to beat down what little competition is has to being the only ebook outfit in the world.
Sigh...
