Default Is "thanks" = "like"?

In many forums, there is a "like" button, which can be clicked by anyone, even someone not directly involved in the discussion. In this forum, there is "thanks", but I envision this as being clicked by someone who is thanking another contributor for an answer to his/her question, and so not equivalent to "like". Am I wrong in this? If I like a reply to someone else's post, do I click "thanks", or is that not the purpose of "thanks"?

You may be over-thinking it. A thanks just indicates approval or agreement, from what I've seen.
