Default Pop-ups

Keep getting pop-ups on this site. Full page ads usually. Is this normal?

It shouldnt be normal. I noticed it a long time back and mentioned it, but havent seen it for a while so figured it had been sorted.

On a related note. I keep getting pop ups telling me to upgrade Java in order to view page. Only on this site. And I have the latest version. So that looks like something pretty dodgy. If anyone else gets one, probably best not to click on it.

I'm getting intermittent popups recently and I don't like it.

Addendum: last night pop-ups on my ipad were so bad that I gave up trying to post.

I have not experienced any pop-ups myself, but I will pass the report onto the CG support team.

The CG suport team is now aware of the problem and is asking what time of day and on what devices/browsers you are getting these pop-ups. This might help them figure things out.

Thanks

I am on a Mac using Safari, but I haven't noticed any specific time of day.

It was happening a lot but seems to have eased off in the last few days.

No issues with popups whatsoever on Linux Mint 16 using Firefox 29. I've got a fairly wide variety of ad-killing and popup-killing extensions running though.

English is a strange language. It can be understood through tough thorough thought though.

I use Adblocker on my laptop, so no issues, but it's a pain on the ipad.

Mike, you more than likely know this, but is there any chance your adbocker is switch to off in your ipad settings?

Settings>Safari>Block Pop-ups>On

Maybe if it's not that, try what I was advised: log out of WB, clear all history etc on your Ipad, delete your Bookmark or WB, re-type WB into the search tool and sign in from there and bookmark the new link.

Flyingtart, I ran into popups a few months back even with using adblocker through Firefox. You could try the same as Mike: log out of WB, clear cookie history etc. Also delete your old bookmark link to WB, then google a fresh link and sign in from there once your cookies etc are cleared.

Something sounds fishy to me. If there are pop-ups on a site, either the people who run WB know about it and they're getting some kind of revenue from it, or the site has somehow been hacked. It's not the users problem -- it's not about the O.S. or the browser etc. The site owners either need to decide that it's not worth annoying members for whatever they're making off the pop-ups, or they need to look into it on their end and fix whatever is causing it.

Whiskers - I'll check that.

Joe - agree completely. Popups don't happen by accident.

This has been 4 or 5 years ago -- but we had a client whose site was hacked -- it was somehow redirecting users through to another site that was planting malware -- you couldn't see it happening. I couldn't wait for the programmer to get involved, so I downloaded all the site files and then ran a search for URLs on all the pages and scripts -- sure enough, I found the redirect -- so I changed the FTP password and uploaded a fresh set of clean files. Problem solved. It was likely hacked because the client was just using FTP not a SFTP for a more secure connection -- so we changed that too. I'm sure there can be more to it than that -- but if it's malware, then I doubt knowing the browser or the time of day the pop-ups appear would tell you anything. So if it's not something they're allowing, then it sounds like they're barking up the wrong tree.

Some months ago, I installed a new browser, Chrome, I think. I started getting pop-ups on my super secure bank site. When I complained, security told me it was my browser, not the bank. I had to uninstall a desktop feature, forgot what it was called, and it worked. Check your control panel uninstall list.

I tried to post last night (on my ipad) to say the popup blocker was enabled. Too many popups prevented me from doing so.

Thank you, Mike and flyingtart. It would be good to know if they've eased at all.
