Default Winter Contest (Poetry) – The Wrong Present

The festive season is here and in full swing, and we have another contest for all of you. We all like getting just the right present, but what if it is the wrong present? Scribble away and present your poem about ‘The Wrong Present’.

Entries:

Members are allowed one entry in the Poetry contest. (You are welcome to enter our prose contest as well.) Poetry entries should be submitted as posts to this thread. The competition is open to all members of Writer’s Beat, including staff.

Members are requested to refrain from commenting on entries in this posting thread. Please use the Winter Contest Comments thread instead. That thread will remain open throughout the posting period and afterwards, and members are encouraged to let entrants know what they thought of their entries.

Word Limits:

Poetry: 40 Lines

Edits:

Once an entry has been submitted, it cannot be altered. Any work that is edited after it has been entered will be disqualified. If you feel you need to make a small alteration (a misplaced comma, a spelling error), contact me or another member of the staff. If we feel your request is reasonable, we will make the correction on your behalf.

Closing Date:

28th February 2015, 12 midnight GMT

Judging:

Winners will be selected by means of a public vote, so you, the members of Writer’s Beat, will choose the winners.

After the closing date, a voting thread will be posted. Voting will commence on the 1st of March and close on the 15th of March 2015, 12 midnight GMT.

If you have any questions about the contest, contact a staff member and we will happily answer them for you. Now sharpen your pencils, fill up your inkwells and get writing. Good Luck!

The Wrong Present

She is so happy to see me.
This stranger filled to the brim with glee.
Who on Earth could she be?

We embrace on the cold, busy street.
Her dirty wool coat brushes my cheek.
We must be old friends, what a treat.

She is homeless and asks nothing of me.
Arm injured, she wants no sympathy.
Her Christmas greeting is a symphony.

I do not deserve such unprovoked kindness.
In my shiny holiday red dress.
Fretting so over all of my silly nonsense.

Oh yes, the wrong present indeed.
Something so sweet for someone like me.
On a cold day for free.

If this contest is still open, I would like to throw my hat in.

The Wrong Present

It's Christmas Day
I wait in silence
For news that since May
I have given offense

The smell of ether
The bloodied hair
The hope for better
The overwrought care

I should've bought better
I shouldn't have rushed
When I got cheap rubber
I knew I was fucked

I looked at its eyes
I hear its loud cry
This is my demise
My rock-a-bye-bye

The cross stained in yellow
My shock and her joy
So nine months and behole
I had a baby boy

Default The Wrong Present

Ta daaa?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You wake up, exited, put the kettle on.
What a beautiful day, how could anything be wrong?
And if the house is too still, who are you to say?
To do anything to ruin this perfect day.

I mean, you planned it all right, you know what she likes.
After all, you were their when she saw it and jumped with delight.
And if the kitchen’s too quiet, it doesn’t matter, you see?
Today all is just as you want it to be.

Sleigh bells ring in night, things are just right.
And so what if the landscape outside isn’t white
With the snow that she told you she wishes for?
Today you will bring her much much more.

And what does it matter if she’s not up yet?
It’s Christmas, the perfect time to get
Up late, to laugh and play.
And nothing can ruin the most perfect of days.

And yeah, maybe she wasn’t in the best of moods,
And your drunken behaviour could be thought of as rude.
Just a harmless prank, though perhaps not the best.
It was the night before Christmas, the time to jest!

Okay, so she’s spent too much time with that Amy,
When you told her to go, you meant stay with me.
And the bed is too cold, and the couch is too wide.
And this day will be spent alone inside.

And who’s really at fault? Could it really be you?
I mean come on, be honest, what did you do?
You were argumentative, but never in spite!
And each time you argued, you always were right!

Then she can go, close the door on her way!
When you said that you loved her you lied anyway.
You don’t need her in your life, like air.
But she’s just always been there.

Always and forever, when you said it you mean it.
And not for second will you ever regret it.
And on your list of gifts you want to receive.
You just say her, back in your life, please.

Default Wrong Presence

Keeping in time I reverse the flow,
to enter a new space where i can attain
the silence so perfect as to set aglow,
the wrong kind of presence.

Never before have I been this serene,
as if engulfed within the flame.
Outreaching the grasp of dreaded routine-
I believe I have beaten the game

What is this? but a moment in time,
"Essence," singular thought.
Twenty odd years I've fumbled with past
and worried while giving up on the future I've wrought.

A momentous gift is this present,
We are free to do with it as we will.
If perceived inadequate this instance...
a wrong kind of moment instilled.

Receive that which is, all else is null.
Cull from your feelings, and discard the dull.
Do not wish for the wrong kind of present,
it will send you into a lull.

Default surprise not

the wrong present
it sits unpleasant
to remind
you
that give and take
is fact
but like and dislike
is tact

to a taste an act
everyone braves
to a crave
so to reconciliate
both meanings
intend and accept
and then forget
because

it may never happen
the thought
that counts the most
is host to a ghost

to lose it is
worst
