I remember those books. Both are my favorites.

Hush by Eishes Chayil. It's absolutely heartbreaking when Devory commits suicide.

One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. At some point I just couldn't take the bullshit they were doing and just stopped reading.

The Shack, William P. Young - the only book that's ever made me cry. The scene where he picks up his son's bones = sob-fest.

One that sticks out is Everything Matters! by Ron Currie. You know what's going to happen and it is a slow countdown til the end. Another is The Gum Thief by Douglas Coupland. Not a traditional weeper until you get to the very end, and then you're either heartbroken or driven to a murderous rage.

Although you already know what is happening The Art of Racing in the Rain is a very sad yet hopeful book. Definitely more sad if you are an animal lover! Would recommend this book to anyone!

The Fifth Child: Doris Lessing
It's been about five years since I read this book. I still have a negative sediment in my heart ...

The Snowman. I mean the original children's classic by Raymond Briggs, not the serial-killer nonsense that's going around at the moment.

From the new publications, I would choose Dog's purpose by W. Bruce Cameron. I cried much. I would be hap[py if someone feels the same

Some of the old classics really get me. At thirteen I cried and cried over The Yearling. The Dickens book, I think it is The Old Curiosity Shop, or some others by him. One that I reread at times is The House of Mirth by Edith Wharton. I want so bad to be that young woman's friend.

The Five People You Meet in Heaven - Mitch Albom.
I read 85% of it on a flight back from Nashville to Phoenix.
When I got home I finished it and cried. It was weird. I was 45 years old, and never cried.

...Hmm...
The Jungle by Upton Sinclair was pretty freakin' sad
Shore of Women by Pamela Sargent was a happy sad
I have a real hard time remembering sad books.
I keep meaning to read Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee -- I hear that's got a happy ending
