The other song I really like of the Kinks is 'I go to sleep'. Or rather it was written by Ray Davies, but I don't think the Kinks ever actually recorded it. German singer Marion Maerz did a great version.

Peter Gabriel does a nice version of The Kinks "Waterloo Sunset." The best part about it is his singing. His voice sounds great -- so much character.

Tarantula legs in my eye, by Blackwidow Tunnel Whatever Thing.

It truly is some great New Wave Hockney.

Yo -- WB peeps!

How about a song with awesome lyrics by our very own Grace Gabriel?!

This is one of my songs in a very different style from what I usually do -- but Grace's lyrics just took me there.

I'm jamming to Mi Gente. It gets my creative juices flowing when I can dance. Or wiggle in my seat, more accurately.

I've been listening to this British band lately, most of you will probably remember them for their most popular song that came out a couple years ago, Pompeii.

Not too bad -- a bit generic for my taste. But decent enough to warrant another listen.

Okay -- this is one of my favorite songs by an Australian band called The Drones. It's just raw energy, straight from the gut. Sounds like Joe Strummer on meth.

They have quite a few very good songs -- but this one blows me away every time I listen to it. Just fantastic.

You and I have different definitions for raw and straight from the gut.

Heh.

To me, raw and straight from the gut is more about a real blend of emotion and great playing. Not just screaming and flailing away.

There was a brief time for that and it served its purpose -- but that sounds like pure shit to me now.

If you listen to Fear's studio recordings they could really play. Yeah, the indulgent live stuff is messy, but they were all masters of their instruments.

I know the band.

The studio stuff is marginally better -- but the idea that they are "masters of their instruments" is pretty silly.

They're just competent enough to do what they do -- and nothing more.

That's just not true at all. Maybe you haven't actually listened to them in a while. They were all really good musicians with the exception of Lee. But... Lee could really front a band.

Yeah, most punk bands couldn't play their instruments, but Fear was not one of those bands.

I've heard them plenty and listened carefully.

Competent.

It means having the skill to do something successfully. That's not a slight.

The idea that they are "masters of their instruments" seems like a massive overstatement to me.

Like a lot of bands, it's about the sum of the whole. As individual musicians, none of them are all that special.

Naw -- punk/hard core punk served it purpose.

There's a mystique around it and a value as far as how it influenced what came after.

But I think the reality is that it's more of an artifact -- and it just doesn't hold up musically.

And by that I mean most of it sounds like shit.

Yeah, most of it DOES sound like shit. But not Fear, Toy Dolls, and Bad Brains. All those guys could really play. Yeah, they got caught up in a movement but the underlying skill is still apparent.

To me it's kind of hard to tell how good most of those guys are or were as musicians.

They're good at that particular thing, which is pretty limited and specific. I have no idea what any of them would sound like if they played clean or tried to play with some amount of subtlety.

Not a knock -- they only had to be as good as required.

Still -- that's not what I think of when I hear a phrase like "masters of their instruments." Like when Rolling Stone named Johnny Ramone one of the top 100 guitarists of all time. Seemed like a bit of a stretch.
