@ BP

Plumbing consultation urgently required.

Had the washing machine on this morning and each time the drum drained, the water came up through the kitchen sink plughole.

The kitchen sink is now blocked.

Shot out and bought off the shelf drain unblocker, but to no avail.

Tried boiling water with bleach, riddling with a meat skewer and plunging.

Thinking the next step is to go under the sink and remove the U bend knuckle joint to look for a block?

I had a cotton bedspread in the wash - wondering if the fibres have balled and blocked the pipe?

Calling a plumber is the last resort - we have special training schools in UK that instruct plumbers in the art of sucking their teeth, whistling and concluding "this won't be cheap luvvie"....

Any advice?

Default Post Your Picture!

The kitchen and the laundry drain are connected before they tie in to the sewer and there is a plug. Unfortunately the blockage is deeper than you'll be able to fix without a rooter machine.

Taking the p-trap off the sink can be an access point but in itself won't help.

Drain cleaning requires expensive machines and experience.

I think you should call a plumber.

Same exact thing happened to us. The washer is on the floor below.

What was weird to me is that the plumber got up on the roof and ran a snake line through the roof vent. I had no idea.

If you call someone (no idea what your choices are there) call a owner/operator business. A small one-man show if you can. Don't call the big flashy ad in the phone book. Usually it's much cheaper and you don't have to listen to the sales pitch.

We first needed a shower drain pan replaced. I called one of the big local companies that advertise on the radio for an estimate. Then I called an independent guy someone recommended and it was about 30% less. I guess the problem is when you're ignorant, you sometimes feel wary of the lower price -- but I ended up using the indy guy.

I tried going on line and the costs were all over the map. At least I did learn something about how it should be done.

Another time when our main line backed up my wife called one of the big guys -- I was out of town. She's kind of an easy mark and he almost had her sold on some kind of warranty.

Roofing, HVAC, electricians etc. -- making those decisions is pretty stressful. You feel like you never know if you're paying too much. But next time I need plumbing work, I'll definitively run the estimates by you.

Guys, thanks for the advice.

If I could avoid the 85 weekend call-out charge as the price starting point - I would - but I can't handle a weekend with the sink and washing machine out of action.

I'll check with neighbours and get a personal recommendation for a decent checkatrade plumber - haven't used one in years.

Just got back from an emergency trip to the vets with Baggy (my black cat, Bagheera) and that was near nigh 200. All the signs of onset kidney failure, so it seems we're heading down the dreaded slope with him.

As someone who usually doesn't sweat the small stuff, today's small stuff has made a sizeable hole in my Saturday.

Thanks again guys. Much appreciated x

Oh man. That's awful.

Our last dog had a bad heart valve. I never added up how much we spent. Just felt like we had to do it. We just kept her going until she started passing out. I couldn't stand the thought of one of the kids finding her dead so we had to put her down.

Our current dog just had an ultrasound -- she has a weak valve too but it's not too bad. The difference is she's 12 and the vet said she should live out her expected age. Our last dog was only 7 when she was diagnosed and she only lived a couple of more years.

Best of luck with your plumbing issues -- and sorry to hear about your cat.

Yeah. I think the function for uploading images is broken. Has been for a while. Even the avatar selecting button doesn't work. I had to get Mo to pick one for me. It was his little joke (man-bun Ken) but I like it. Ken's a good looking guy, man-bun or no.

You have to upload pics to a photo sharing site and post the link. Google drive would probably work, but I haven't tried it.

It's almost always better to hire self employed tradesmen. They have a vested interest in doing a decent because it's their business on the line if they don't.

That sounds like too much work. I just added a picture of myself to an album on my profile because I can't seem to fit my fat head into a profile picture; my ego is too large I guess.
