Default Some Truth

Her name is Jamie. Jamie M.
Brown eyes. Soft brown hair
past her shoulders. Slim. Wonderful
smile. A voice you like in your
ear.

She was livin' with her mom.
Nice lady. Never heard about
her father. Comin' from a broke
family myself I didn't even
think to ask such a question.

This was Tulsa. Tulsa, Oklahoma.

The weather was livable. No
tornadoes.

I had
a room in a house where the
Presbyterian minister and his wife
lived. A few years before and
a few states away he had
gone to bat for me at
a Juvenile Court function.

Messy situation in my life
(I told you the family was broken)
'cause I was short of
eighteen and had to be
livin' under an adult's roof.

This guy stepped up.

Why I never really knew except
that it was a good thing to do
for a person at a perilous
Y in life's road. Maybe that
was all there was to it.

I was declared an emancipated
minor (means I have 18 year old
rights before 18th birthday).

Off to California I go.
Then to Tulsa (yeah - wanderlust).

So Jamie and I are kinda
boyfriend and girlfriend.

Kinda.
I ain't got no car, she lives far
and no one picks up hitchhikers.

The walkin' did me good.

Mostly we did our huggin' and kissin'
at the restaurant where we both
worked.

She was 17. I was 18. We were
in that kind of love only teenagers
are permitted to know.

But I knew not how to main-
tain a relationship.

I hitchhiked back to Pa.

to be continued - hey, my keyboard pokin' finger tips are gettin' tired

Really dig this, it speaks to me,

It may just be because I too became an emancipated adult, and had my share of wanderlust, plus the fucking family, but I think the parenthetical lines are unnecessary. Then again, may just be my viewpoint. Lets see someone else weigh in

She was 17. I was 18. We were
in that kind of love only teenagers
are permitted to know.

But I knew not how to main-
tain a relationship.

I hitchhiked back to Pa.

Futzed around and decided to
make for California again.

Stopped in Tulsa. My benefactor
told me she had been callin'.

I called her, she was livin' in an
apartment. I visited. She
says the guy she lives with
uses heroin.

Then we are finally consumating
our attraction to each other. I am
doin' what it takes to make this
long, slow and tender.

After some time she says "You
better put it in second gear.
He will be home soon."

Before leaving the apartment
I asked her to come with me
to California.

She said she could not leave her
mother. That she was all her
mother had.

And I left. Went to Cal. and
entered full blown alcohol activity.
Wrecked a car by hittin' a parked
one (2nd day of Vodka and orange juice).
Got arrested another time for
trespassing, brandishing and drunk.

Had a couple of tumultous
(are there any other kind in that lifestyle?)
relationships.

Years went by. I got tired of bein' stupid. Somehow
I got sober. A few times.
Now it seems to have stuck.

And I got married. In a few
months it will be 20 years
I been married.
And it is love . A mature
enduring love.

But part of gettin' straight, stayin
straight is bein' straight with
yourself. Err, myself.

And sometimes I think of Jamie.
Yes, I know - Facebook.
But I ain't that kind of guy.

She is probably - wait a sec' -
I did (more'n two
decades ago) ask information
for a Jamie M. in Tulsa.

Got a number and called it.
Listened to her voice say she and
some other name (male) were not
there.

I did not leave a message and
(as I was writing) she is probably
someones' grandmother now.

And now, as I squat against a
pole waiting for the Social
Security office to open (crowdin'
66) I can clearly see her clear eyed
unlined teenage face smilin' at
me.

I'm sure all spouses have their
secrets.

And mine ain't so bad, eh?

Finished and thank y'all for your patience.

I say think of more powerful adjectives. My partner always says don't use a color unless necessary. Chestnut hazel etc, bright or something I stead of the second clear. Adjectives are a bane unless strong. If not cut maybe
