I'm going to try to explain this the best I can haha.
"Thanks" is whenever you post a comment and in the bottom right corner of the comment there is : Quote, Multi-quote, quick reply, and Thanks. If someone finds your comment useful they can Thank you for it. You can do the same thing if you find someone's post helpful, you can "Thank" them for it.

Hi Eris! lunastryder gave the jist of it. Here's a bit more info from our FAQ:
At the bottom right of everyone's posts, there is a "Thanks" button. This is a quick and easy little way to express gratitude to someone for a helpful post. When you thank someone for a post, their Thanks tally goes up one. If you look at the top right of a person's posts, or in their profile, you'll see that tally. It looks like this:

Thanks: 22
Thanks 62

The top one (with the colon) is the tally of Thanks the person has given, and the bottom is the tally of Thanks received. This person has thanked 22 posts, and been thanked 62 times. It's not a competition to see who's made the most useful posts, or anything like that, but just a nice, easy way to let somebody know you were helped by or enjoyed the post they made.
Another cool thing you can do is go into someone's profile and find lists of all the thanked posts for a person. In your profile, it looks like this:

Find all thanked posts by Eris Find all posts thanked by Eris

You can use these links to get an idea of what quality posts the person has made or has appreciated. In the top menu, where it says "Search", you can find a list of all thanked posts for the whole forum.

Definitely don't treat it like a competition. Otherwise, nobody would thank anyone else. (Meh! My thanks! Mine! My...my precious! Thank me, plebeian hordes!)

I like to give out thanks when I feel that someone has taken time out of their day to help me in my writing. Sometimes, even if someone has something that may not be the most positive thing to say--I'll thank it because if there's something constructive that I can get out of the comment, it's nice to show the appreciation

Same here I thank people that comment on my work, and help me evolve. I thank people asking my characters questions in the Character Clinics as well, when those questions help me develop my characters. Other than that, I thank people who posted something crucial about writing that I didn't know yet.

I think somehow, somewhere deep inside everyone does have that feeling

See the thing you just posted? Well, above it is your name. Click on your name. Click "View Public Profile". Then you can see your own thanked posts.
