Default Topics for contests

I've raised this a fair bit in the past...

But I've come back to this thought, now.

Why not a single topic and the rest is flexible?

Have one single topic. Rain. And you can choose to write a non-fiction or fiction; prose or poetry, etc.

Yes, I know: too big, hard to judge as they're different... but consider: say, currently, I want to write a poem on Rain. Currently, I'm limited. Which in a way is good... or is it? These contests, yes, are meant to limit you so you focus on exploring new topics. But you can surely do this in different forms, too.

Thanks for the suggestion, SW! We're always tweaking the contests to get more responses. Last time, we allowed the winners to choose the new topics, which is why we have two. But I, too, think the "rain" prompt would make a great poem and it's only for prose. Hmm...

A question: when you talk about having just one topic, do you also mean having just one judging? I.e. prose and poetry judged together? Or do you mean one topic but still judge them separately? I ask because it seems to me that poetry and prose are judged on different criteria, so separate judgings might still be best, even if the topic is the same.

Mmm, that's what I said, referring to how the difficulty of judging is one of the reasons why it's not done...

But I reckon... perhaps a way would just to have poetry and prose. No non fiction, unfortunately, that sort of thing.

Or judge them together, although that wouldn't be fair.

We could judge fiction and non-fiction together. They're both prose, and people will still be voting on whether the work was interesting and well-written. So that would be one topic but two sections...

I'll bring it up with the other staff for next time. See what the consensus is. Thanks!

The first comp did have one single theme for prose and poetry, which were judged separately. The two themes arises from allowing winners to select the next theme. Seems to me that either the winners of the two strands would need to agree on the theme (experience shows this is unlikely) or the perq of selecting the next theme would have to be removed. Then there could be one single theme, selected by the staff, possibly from a list of suggestions made by members. Just my tuppenceworth.

This might work! In some cases, winners either suggest several themes, or are unwilling to suggest one. Perhaps winners/runners-up could provide the pool to pick from.

Winners suggest a theme and the staff picks between the two?

Theme or themes. Like I said, some winners give multiple ideas already, so there's already a selection process.
