Default should the close 3rd person narrator know who everyone is?

I am using the close third person POV for my current project. In a particular segment of a scene I have my hacker watching two teenagers. In the beginning of the segment I use only basic identifiers for the teens sense she does not know their names. Once their names become known to the hacker I begin using their real names. Is this correct? Am I just splitting hairs?

Sounds fine. Why not use the real names once the main character discovers them? Just make sure to connect the previous identifiers to the names to transition them over, otherwise the reader would be like, "What?? Who's that??" Lol.

Agree with Devon. It really depends on how strong your narrator voice is in the piece. Even in Limited third person there's still a narrator. The narrator can say their names, but the character can't until they find out if that makes sense. Either way works, but keep it in line with the rest of the narration. Aspects like this happen with more than just names.

Hi MCV.

Interesting issue.

I don't know what's right, but here's what I do with my stories.

Until a name has been supplied for a character, I try to give some characteristic so I can ID them, especially with dialogue. One given a name I use it, but if the characteristic is strong, sometimes I switch back and forth.

Default Names vs. Identifiers

Sorry, I accidentally posted this in the wrong section and cannot figure out how to delete it.
