Default Prediction

Everyone is adversarial
with this world
the future is sitting there
with its infinite arms
clasping swords and
severed heads and
bowls of incense,
children,
tax credits,
courses of questionable prescriptions,
natural disasters
and whatever else

A hindu arbiter,
disinterested,
unashamedly unfair,
maxims displayed at its feet

Hard work may or may not pay off

Crime might pay

You might get away with
being a cunt forever

Life is unfair

There is no divine justice

Choose wisely!

We sit in front of it
doleful-eyed and clueless

trying

in adolescence, to explain ourselves
with a selection of half accomplished lies
a disarranged identity and a jumble sale of
contradictory convictions

trying

to bluff future into aquiescence
to dodge the bullets —
that deadly variable interest rate,
that landmine of some glib lover which
can turn your balls to flying mince with
one false lustful move

trying

with some useless crystal ball
or worse! an entirely hypothetical map
put together by the blind cartographers who
are your parents! — every wrong turn
bequeathed in earnest are the
much lamented sins of the father

trying

in spite of all this, to build these bridges
through time, deferring gratification
we hope, so that the future self might
thank us, instead of pouring over
how utterly terrible we were
at prediction

Nice bit of work.

At the end do you intend pouring rather than poring?

Perhaps pouring is a UK spelling of poring the way US spelling of color becomes colour?

Some of the phrases and descriptions are FANTASTIC, but there is some stuff that seems too much like a cliche and some stuff that really is not necessary.

This beginning seems a bit too general and awkward. One is an adversary against someone else, not exactly with someone.

Everyone is adversarial
with this world
the future is sitting there

This has some stark, great imagery:

with its infinite arms
clasping swords and
severed heads and
bowls of incense,

I don't like this line:

and whatever else
,

This is GREAT:
unashamedly unfair,

Too much like a cliche:
Hard work may or may not pay off

Crime might pay

This is a very brisk and bold recovery after the preceding cliches:

You might get away with
being a cunt forever

THIS IS REALLY GERAT:

that landmine of some glib lover which
can turn your balls to flying mince with
one false lustful move

Thanks for reading.

I'll think about some better maxims I think you're right. The sentiment I want is there but I could say it in a more original way.

People think the whole 'life is unfair' thing is a negative cop-out which it's not, it's just true. It's part of growing up to know that but take your chances anyway, in the knowledge that the alternative, inertia, apathy, is much worse.

hmmm maybe it's in there somewhere!

Oh?
And would you be kind enough to offer a "Fair Life" description?

I've affirmed here that life is unfair.

I could describe why life is unfair.

The 'Fair Life' is a total nonsense. It's a pretty significant truth which is aggressively militated against by the human mind in my view. How? Well we invent ways to balance out the metaphysics of fairness -- through philosophical mysticism like heaven, hell, divine justice, Karma, etc etc. None of that exists.

Fair enough.
Thanks for responding.

Black Lives Matter is all about a fair life. Perhaps you could ask them.

The list of demands is a good one:

White [people] if you don’t have any descendants, will your property to a Black or Brown family. Preferably one that lives in generational poverty. … White [people] if you can afford to downsize give up the home you own to a Black or Brown family. Preferably a family from generational poverty. … White [people], re-budget your monthly so you can donate to Black funds for land purchasing.

I wouldn't want to spark a debate about BLM here, only illustrate how this mentality manifests. This is basically the gist, you get varying degrees most more cleverly clothed than this one but the core message is the same.

Anyone who achieved anything didn't do it by themselves. They went to school, and learned from teachers, who in turn learned from other teachers, who all stand on the shoulders of innumerable other teachers who have through history compiled the wealth of human knowledge we have today.

Nothing, not even you thoughts are you own!

Because everything therefore is the product of human endeavour rather than strictly individual skill everything produced must belong to all of society.

Imagine the cure for cancer for example. Someone finds it, but they didn't do it in a vacuum. Innumerable people have been working towards it and one individual just happened to succeed -- does that then justify the individuals sole claim to the cure and the right to set the price?

OK we see how this works, now just extrapolate. This stuff is all over communistic theory. The upshot is now you have a bunch of not very intelligent people demanding that successful folks hand over their stuff.

I don't think they really know what that means in practice. The irony is, it's a bloodbath, always will be, not something you would promote if you think any lives matter!
