Default For Fame

In you, our tool for ritual
this love we have
for your duty to tradition
must outweigh all
personal notions

In your sacred elephant
eye which peers out from
gaping sturnham,
that same bestial look --
Paraded around in fine fabric
by men and women who will
forget you tomorrow if
they don't kill you first

Rene Girard in Violence and the Sacred (and Sacred Violence) observes that in communal sacrifice it is often the case that the sacrificial object embodies (or imbued with) those elements most reviled and revered in a society. Of his many examples he employs the case of Oedipus Rex who is simultaneously king and outsider, a parricide and a husband guilty of incest (he was raised if memory serves by a sheep herder). He first saves the kingdom from the Sphinx but then brings plagues upon the kingdom through the act of incest. His second act is his selfblinding and exile.

Perhaps whats lamented in the poem is the soteriological lack in fame. Fame is acquired through self-sacrifice but the sacrifice of the sacrificial object does nothing to rejuvenate the society. It serves as no example.
