Default Advice column

Hello WB. To anyone who doesn't know me, I'm Michelle (AkinaTsuji). I recently got an idea to do an advice column for the WB magazine. I know plenty of newspapers in my area have them and my old school newspaper was thinking of one.
To get to my point, I'm now a staff columnist for the WB magazine. I will be doing the advice column each issue. I really like giving advice to people that actually ask for it. So what I ask is that, if you have a question you want advice or extra advice on PM it to me and I'll try to answer a few or more every issue.

Thanks!

Thanks, I'm hoping it works out well too. I'm also hoping that some WB members will PM me questions to answer every month

Great idea, Michelle.
At the moment, I don't have a question for you, but I'll think of something :-)

Good luck and happy writing.

Edward.

When you say 'question', do you mean a writing question, or just any problem?

Just a direct reply to the post:

A writing question, did you mean "a question about writing"? :-)

I think that Daniel would prefer questions about writing, but if you have other questions I can try and answer them too.

At the moment, just questions about writing.

Isn't that what the tips and advice forum is for?

Both the website and its e-zine are dedicated to the craft of writing. We cannot include a column about members' problems.

Don't take this as an outward no. I will mention this to Jillian and Daniel and see what they have to say about this.

That wasn't what I meant. I just don't see it as a great idea since you have the same function, but in my opinion better because more people can contribute, on the forum. I think if this place is truly dedicated to writing there would be only be a chat place, no games. But that could be just me.

I just checking with some other staff members about this and I'm awaiting their reply...I will get back to this thread once I hear back.

I think its a good idea...especially if members were able to PM a question to you Akina. Posting a question on a forum can be daunting, especially if you think that its a 'dumb' question, for fear of embarrasing yourself...I know I have embarrased myself on numerous occasions on this site!Whereas a question asked in private and an anonymous response in the mag is much safer for one's street cred...don't you think?

Careful with that, though. Make sure that the answer given is the correct one. I wouldn't want to give any absolutes on anything. Will the columnist be verifying her answer? For instance, if it's a question about semi-colons or run-ons, I would want to make sure I checked with a reliable reference before giving an answer to someone.

I will make sure I have a reliable reference before posting any answers.

As for the PM thing, I like that idea a lot.

Okay the update is that the advice column is just for writing advice.

Some people have questions that may be embarrassing to ask. The advice column is anonymous for all. All you have to do is PM me the questions. I'm not going to judge or laugh at anyone.

What could possibly be embarrassing about a question on writing?

I am very certain that even you native Eng. speakers have the same problems as I do.

Michelle, I have a site where I collect writing related stuff.
Maybe you could check it out, see what you can use.

http://www.freewebs.com/hal2003

The Legal and Style pages are still empty.
My legal knowledge is naught, I need help on good sites.
My English is not up to discerning good Style sites, ditto.

Regards,
Edward

Thanks.

I'm mostly just looking for some members to ask questions so I can answer them in the monthly magazine. I'll answer more then just one question though.

Even hardcore writers need a diversion on occasion. Nothing wrong with games on the forum. All work and no play makes Jill a dull girl...

P.S. - Akina, how about a Poll question? You can then use the replies in your article.

True everyone needs a break. But there's a whole cosmos out there, I don't see why it has to be on this site. Like I said it could, and seems to be just me. I play Tetris to wind down but I keep work and play seperate, always have.

Maybe that should be the first poll question...do games stimulate writers?

Nobody is forcing anyone to play games. There are plenty of sites that do not have a games area. The games area here is an added bonus and occasionally it gives me ideas and helps the creative process, but that's just me...Besides it facilitaes the forming of friendships, assists with networking and aids that all important contact that writers need, in what can be a lonely profession/hobby/vocation

I don't like to think of visiting this site as 'work,' LOL - I get enough of that at my job. Besides, many of the writing-only (no-game/no chat) sites are rather boring and I visit them less than once a month.

I don't frequent the games threads much at all, though, except a couple in the VIP forum, and they take less than a minute to check on. Games are a nice way for people to get to know each other as well. There's nothing wrong with them if that's what people want to do.
