Default Why Did You Smash Up My Guitar?

Well, youíre gone now honey, and I donít even miss you.
I forgive you for leaving ícause I now that youíve got your issues.

But donít you think this time went a bit too far?
Come on now girl -- why did you smash up my guitar?

You could have sent it off to China in an old suitcase.
You could have hidden it away in your secret place.

You couldíve burned down the house or even crashed my car.
Yeah, you said you were sorry, but I donít think you are.

But donít you think this time you went a bit too far?
Come on now girl, why did you smash up my guitar?

I got to have another ícause the only thing that lingers,
is the ringing in my ears and the blisters on my fingers.

Now I donít play piano or the violin,
so what you did to me honey, is the worst kind of sin.

But donít you think this time you went a bit too far?
Come on now girl, why did you smash up my guitar?

Drove over to Biloxi and I blew all my cash,
Spent the last on a handful and a half tank of gas.

Now I know I didnít call and Iím sorry for it honey,
but I canít buy another git tar cause Iím all out of money.

But donít you think this time you went a bit too far?
Come on now girl, why did you smash up my guitar?

I called the girl next door, but she didnít wanna come,
so I went upstairs and I beat on my drums.

Tried blowing on a harp, tried playing the bass,
But canít you see now honey, Iím a basket case?

Donít you think this time you went a bit too far?
Come on now girl, why did you smash up my guitar?

Seriously I would like your CD. I like that underground southern grunge/rock sound. I like the whiskey growl on the guitar

Boom!

Thatís really good. My wife once threw a $1000 acoustic in the pool after a big fight. It was a Breedlove acoustic. But... she didnít throw my P bass in, so it was okay. I think she knew. I was being an asshole, but the bass was off limits😀

I like the vocal range. Iíd like to here you overdrive it just a bit. But if not, the swagger is still good.

Iím working on a song for your voice. So far itís about a bar fight gone wrong, but that might change. Iím trying to copy your delivery. Itís fun making stuff with a goal in mind.

Iíll keep you posted. Prolly just record an acoustic version and post it. Then you can have it. Been real busy with work, so itís slow going.

Thanks! I'm going to be uploading finished songs to bandcamp, reverb, soundcloud etc. -- hopefully before too long. And you you can download any of these from the google drive link posted here too.

Cheers.

Thanks. I'm pretty happy with the basic song idea-- I recorded the vocals in pieces so that needs to be done in one shot.

The lead solo is pretty bad too -- I'm redoing that now.

This was inspired by something my wife said -- she was joking around. She hates it when she's talking to me and I'm still noodling with the guitar -- I swear I can pay attention...

This has a new lead solo -- big improvement I think. Too much fuzz in that last one -- the tone on this one matches the the other riff -- and it just goes with the song better.

Thanks, man. I'll probably run through it a few more times -- maybe piece it together a little. If David Gilmore can do it, so can I.

I meant to ask -- was the guitar OK? Seems like that probably wouldn't damage an acoustic if you fished it out fast enough. My wife changed the locks once -- but that's another story...

Heh. Cool.

I'm going to put it up there and any proceeds are going to my favorite rehab.

Let me know. If I could get a signed copy that would be great. I have a collection from bands I like. A few are actually popular now, or were. I don't wanna sale or collect per se, just have if that makes any sense

I'd like to make a CD -- I'm a graphic designer by training, so I think I could do a cool one. The only people I know who are doing CD's play gigs and they sell them along with other merchandise maybe along with vinyl. There's really not a good reason for me to spend the money on it.

A while back I saw a band opening for some guys I know, I liked them, so I bought a CD and a 45. The guy was like -- thanks, now we have enough to buy gas to get to the next gig. That's dedication for you.

And I wanted to say: I just listened on the big stereo so I could hear the bass. +++ for peddling some, but - - - for the runs. Itís not the fill runs, but the end of every phrase ones.

Itís not a melodic instrument. Yeah, you can do that, but itís much better (in rock) if you donít. Just peddle. Let the guitars and voice shine. Be the stupid fat guy in prison that just takes it up the ass and never complains.

Once in a song, orchestrate a blow-out to show what you can do. Make it really good. Otherwise, just make people dance. Thatís a bass players job.

I can think of plenty of songs that rock with more melodic bass lines -- as long as you keep hitting those eighth notes. My guess is the answer for a song like this is somewhere in between. I could see maybe playing it more straight up throughout and then opening it up a bit in the fade out. Not sure there is a one size fits all approach.

Yeah, definitely not a one size fits all. I just meant in general not finishing up every phrase with a fill, and avoiding the urge to fill while the vocals and guitars are doing their thing. Itís the same with the drums (not particularly this song).

Iím also only really interested in pop music, no matter what the ďgenreĒ so my opinions may be biased. Okay, yeah, they are biased.

I dig it. Mellow but crunchy.

Do you play all the instruments on the track?

I'm a drummer, so I'd like to hear a little more variation there, but the simple beat works for the song. I would like to hear crashes during the chorus breaks where you're using a ride cymbal, kinda echoing the words ("why'd you smash up my guitar"). Then again, the voice is mellow there, so I can see the reason for the bell instead. Would also like to hear bass drum on note after snare, mirroring the guitar and bass... boom-cha-boom...cha. boom-cha-boom... cha. But I'm just being nitpicky. Works fine on 1s and 3s too.

Really good. Seriously. Now I have to hunt for some more of your recordings.

It's all good. The direction you're pushing me in with the bass is the right one. For some reason, I always hear R.E.M. style bass lines in my head -- and I want to use those to fill the space -- but usually, less is more.

I'm mostly digital -- building up the vinyl, but I have boxes of CD's in my basement and I just can't part with them...

Hey, thanks for listening! I play everything -- but I used a sample based VST for the drums. I rough them out on a keyboard and then refine them in my recording app. -- add fills etc. I play drums -- but it not very well. I have a kit set up for recording and the intention is to always re-record with real drums -- I have a couple of friends who are pretty solid drummers.

I'm out of town now -- but I'll post some links for you to other songs at some point next week if you want to check back. A few have real drum tracks.

I can totally hear your suggestions too...

Cheers!

Just for kicks, I added a few harmonica bits with a solo at the end:

And the vocal sounds cleaner. Did you re-record or just mix it different?

Awesome -- as long as you can record it on a separate track -- that should work.

The vocal -- yeah -- I remixed it. But I was busy when I recorded it, so I sang it in sections throughout the day. You can hear the inconsistencies. When I re-record it all once, it should sound a lot better. I just need to wait until everyone is out of the house.

Thanks -- I haven't played harmonica to speak of in at least ten years. It felt pretty good.
