Public Breast Feeding

In a recent letter to the editor of a Honolulu newspaper a woman compared breast feeding in public to pornography and public urination. She also referred to female breasts as "sexual organs."

I was shocked by the level of prudery and ignorance in comments by a woman. Physiologically speaking, female breasts are not sex organs. They are appendages with milk-producing glands to feed infant children.

In simpler societies, like the native culture of old Hawaii, women covered their genitalia out of modesty, but not their breasts. They understood that the natural function of female breasts is to provide food for infants as well as comfort and mutual bonding.

Actress Rita Wilson knows this, too. After she and husband Tom Hanks had their first child, she had to explain to Hanks that her enlarged breasts were for the benefit of the baby and not him.

Hanks belongs to generations of American men who received baby formula in bottles instead of breast feeding when they were infants. Withholding the mother's breast caused a sexual obsession with female breasts in general during adulthood.

A woman calling public breast feeding pornography shows how far both sexes have strayed from our origins in nature. Comparing it to public urination is perversely disgusting.

I am continually amazed by society's embarrassment for it's own sexuality. I do no understand why seeing a couple have sex in a movie is an affront to society, while people getting their heads chopped off is merely par for the course. They say that kids shouldn't know anything about sex. What?? I can't go into it now because I'm about to leave for vacation, but I'll come back to this topic when I've returned.

EDIT: And furthermore, breast feeding isn't even sexuality @_@ Crazy prudes.

Every major religion that originated in the Middle East -- Judaism, Christianity and Islam -- teaches that sex is "dirty." This is evidence that living in deserts drives people insane eventually.

Religions from the tropics and other green areas -- Hinduism, Buddhism and Taosim -- consider sex perfectly natural.

Places abundant in life beget life-affirming beliefs. Barren places produce unhealthy attitudes. It's all environmentally related.

I think someone should pee on her in protest! Comparing a baby feeding in such a tender, loving, and beneficial way to pornography shows that this woman is a sick, demented psycho and her remarks should be regarded as such. Maybe we should give her a break - she was probably bottle fed and is experiencing nipple envy.

I understand that some people may feel uncomfortable about it, especially when you don't expect to see it in a public place, although that said who does expect to see breast feeding? But anyway... I understand that people may not be comfortable with the idea, but to say it's like porn or public urination is just plain... stupid!

Why consider it necessary to hide the sex organs, but permit breast feeding? It's all natural, and so is peeing in public. Sure, pee in a way that doesn't spread disease. But really, we've all inherited these attitudes for a whole bunch of reasons. They're all open to challenge.

The woman who disapproved of public breast feeding is just reflecting the set of values she carries. Values vary between and within cultures. Any particular society has to set the bar where it feels it belongs, and still over the course of generations the bar gets moved, and at any one time there will likely be many who feel uncomfortable with the values of the society they live in.

It's really American society that is prude as far as I can tell. I've heard many tell me this never happens in Europe (meaning no one cares) is this true?

Comparing Breast Feeding to something like porn is sick, as they, biologically, have nothing to do with each other.

I would be rather uncomfortable if I walked into a library and saw something like that going on, but it wouldn't have any other effect on me.

There is one thing I'd like to correct though.

"Every major religion that originated in the Middle East -- Judaism, Christianity and Islam -- teaches that sex is 'dirty.'"- Starrwriter

Not so. I know for a fact that Christianity views sex as something sacred, something special to be shared between a man and woman who are married. In fact, I do believe the Bible commands a married couple to have sex.

However, sex between an unmarried couple IS "dirty"(AKA, a sin), as it is a perversion of what sex was meant to be.

Awww ... Methinks his mother must have bottle fed him. It's a cruel world when a grown man has to rely on dreams to obtain the satisfaction he was denied in infancy.

I see little social qualms regarding public breast feeding. Many that do do it, do it in a tactful way. There are some times when it might be inappropriate to just take a breat out and start feeding the baby, without attempting some concealment.

Agreed that there is a time and a place, but we all seem to agree that people shouldn't be afraid of breasts

What kind of bees produce milk?

Boobies! Bahaha...

A girl in my class all of a sudden told that joke today in art class. She was laughing so hard I could hardly believe it.

I have three children and have breastfed them all, and when they get hungry you can't expect them to wait until you get home! I usually try to find a quiet corner where I am undisturbed. So far I have not had too many negative responses to this, aside from a few teenage boys who have an obvious difficulty with maturity.
To compare it to pornography is merely ludicrous.
