Apparently many animal lovers would. The reaction is always horror when I bring this up. The local paper wouldn't even print a tongue-in-cheek letter proposing the idea.

Part of the letter asked, "Are you horrified? Then go hold the hand of one of those starving little children as they die and tell them how we didn't think it was appropriate that they eat dog meat so we buried it all in a landfill in Weehoken (or wherever). That'll make them feel better."

I think some people would rather we shipped African kids over here to feed starving homeless people. As long as they (the kids) are black, of course.

All animals are basically meat. it's only custom and convention that says pig is good (or bad, if you're jewish or Arabic) and dog is bad (mostly).

Dog is kinda stringy ( or so I've heard) Even wild pigs have hams that cut and chew cleanly, with little sticking between your teeth...

I don't want anyone to starve. I just don't like the idea of eating dogs. But if that's the only food source some people have, that's OK. And also if they have an abundance of food source and still want to eat dogs, I am OK with that too. Actually no, I'm not. But I do believe in cultural self determination. It pisses me off that the Japanese like to eat whales. But I don't think we have any right to stop them. I hope one day they won't though.

It's only custom and convention that says eating beef is cool and eating humans is bad. ^^

Just to add a little perspective to this: HUMAN BEINGS ARE ANIMALS, TOO!!

And, just to make you perfectly queasy when you sit down to dinner today, I have always wanted to make reservations at a restaurant under the name of Donner. It would just be so much fun to hear them call for "Donner - Party of 12." (And then, of course, only have five or six people show up with the explanation, "We got tired of waiting." HAH!)

Now, for the uninformed, back when America was being "discovered" by European settlers wayyyyy back in the day, the Donner party (led by George Donner) traversed the northern pass through the Sierra Nevada enroute to California and were caught in a winter storm. Many died during that winter from sickness and starvation and survivors, to forestall that same fate, ate the bodies of their dead.

We call it cannibalism but it's really not much different from eating the corpse of any other sentient animal. And, if you don't think a dog or a horse or a cow sheep is sentient... Have you ever seen the panic and fear in a sheep at a slaughterhouse? And, if they are not intelligent beings, how is it you can train a dog or a pig or a horse or most other quadruped? Heck! You can even train a chicken if you've got enough patience.

And, if they aren't intelligent, how is it they mourn for a lost companion - human or four-footed? And, did you know most raptors (hawks, eagles, birds of prey) mate for life?

Just sayin'.

Your point is that cannibalism is OK because morals are culturally relative.
