Default Publishing a short story compilation

I want to try and publish a collection of my flash fiction and short stories into a book. I queried the idea to one group but they asked for 200 dollars for printer costs. They said that this is normal but I wasn't sure so I thought I'd ask.

If this is not normal, what would you guys/gals recommend?

Traditional: unless you're a 'name', you don't stand a cat in hell's chance of getting a collection of shorts published.

Self-publishing: you won't sell any copies, but $200 is a rip-off. Check out Lulu.com - it costs nothing to set the book up, then a per-book cost to buy.

Please, though, before you commit, give some thought to how you'll sell the book, and who to.

From what I've read from "name" authors, publishers cringe even at them when it comes to publishing short-story collections.

It seems to be you have to die before your collection of shorts becomes an intersting prospect:

Joyce, Poe, and even the more recently deceased J D Salinger, who now has a facebook page dedicated to Bananafish...
