I was just about to make a thread like this

Here's one from a band I just recently discovered, The Decemberists. The song is titled "The Mariners Revenge". The music is quite catchy, and decievingly upbeat. Kind of a folksy feel to it.

I still think Bob Dylan is the greatest poet-lyricist:

IT'S ALRIGHT, MA (I'M ONLY BLEEDING)

Darkness at the break of noon
Shadows even the silver spoon
The handmade blade, the child's balloon
Eclipses both the sun and moon
To understand you know too soon
There is no sense in trying.

Pointed threats, they bluff with scorn
Suicide remarks are torn
From the fool's gold mouthpiece
The hollow horn plays wasted words
Proves to warn
That he not busy being born
Is busy dying.

Temptation's page flies out the door
You follow, find yourself at war
Watch waterfalls of pity roar
You feel to moan but unlike before
You discover
That you'd just be
One more person crying.

So don't fear if you hear
A foreign sound to your ear
It's alright, Ma, I'm only sighing.

As some warn victory, some downfall
Private reasons great or small
Can be seen in the eyes of those that call
To make all that should be killed to crawl
While others say don't hate nothing at all
Except hatred.

Disillusioned words like bullets bark
As human gods aim for their mark
Made everything from toy guns that spark
To flesh-colored Christs that glow in the dark
It's easy to see without looking too far
That not much
Is really sacred.

While preachers preach of evil fates
Teachers teach that knowledge waits
Can lead to hundred-dollar plates
Goodness hides behind its gates
But even the president of the United States
Sometimes must have
To stand naked.

An' though the rules of the road have been lodged
It's only people's games that you got to dodge
And it's alright, Ma, I can make it.

Advertising signs that con you
Into thinking you're the one
That can do what's never been done
That can win what's never been won
Meantime life outside goes on
All around you.

You lose yourself, you reappear
You suddenly find you got nothing to fear
Alone you stand with nobody near
When a trembling distant voice, unclear
Startles your sleeping ears to hear
That somebody thinks
They really found you.

A question in your nerves is lit
Yet you know there is no answer fit to satisfy
Insure you not to quit
To keep it in your mind and not fergit
That it is not he or she or them or it
That you belong to.

Although the masters make the rules
For the wise men and the fools
I got nothing, Ma, to live up to.

For them that must obey authority
That they do not respect in any degree
Who despise their jobs, their destinies
Speak jealously of them that are free
Cultivate their flowers to be
Nothing more than something
They invest in.

While some on principles baptized
To strict party platform ties
Social clubs in drag disguise
Outsiders they can freely criticize
Tell nothing except who to idolize
And then say God bless him.

While one who sings with his tongue on fire
Gargles in the rat race choir
Bent out of shape from society's pliers
Cares not to come up any higher
But rather get you down in the hole
That he's in.

But I mean no harm nor put fault
On anyone that lives in a vault
But it's alright, Ma, if I can't please him.

Old lady judges watch people in pairs
Limited in sex, they dare
To push fake morals, insult and stare
While money doesn't talk, it swears
Obscenity, who really cares
Propaganda, all is phony.

While them that defend what they cannot see
With a killer's pride, security
It blows the minds most bitterly
For them that think death's honesty
Won't fall upon them naturally
Life sometimes
Must get lonely.

My eyes collide head-on with stuffed graveyards
False gods, I scuff
At pettiness which plays so rough
Walk upside-down inside handcuffs
Kick my legs to crash it off
Say okay, I have had enough
What else can you show me?

And if my thought-dreams could be seen
They'd probably put my head in a guillotine
But it's alright, Ma, it's life, and life only.

Say what you will about the man personally, but I think Dave Mustaine (of Megadeth) writes some great pieces. This snippet for instance:
In our life, there is "if"
In our beliefs, there is "lie"
In our business, there is "sin"
In our bodies, there is "die"

Or the song 'Promises', one of my favorites;
Promises

This is 'Crowquill' by Circle takes the Square.. A few lines I really enjoy are bolded
Nothing's so lucid as the promise of dreams, but these pills we found just make me sleep.
There's nothing quite so pure as the written word my dear, so lets have ourselves a little poem.
Until the will to speak loses urgency.
Our animal indecency in print is so blase.
Its about the bell tower, at the golden hour.
Angel of the spires climbs here steel cage staircase spine, angle of desire.
Ascend the wrought iron, one by one, wrung by wrung.
Is it the rising roof line that makes me feel so swallowed whole,
or the way my body barely pricks the sky,
the same as a century's worth of virgin's blood that's passed through my longing veins,
scheming to convince my aching mind that pleasure's got nothing on the miracle of need.
Nothing's so purile as meter and rhyme when you can't see the ground from that ledge and this perch is so far, far from the nest.
Gravity doesn't grant me the privilege of failure my bough never breaks
I don't stumble into anything
so I climb and I carve my initials in the bark with that feather I found but its all so contrived.
My genes didn't bless me with the foresight of a sage but I know how this will end, in apologies and ink on the page.
A slowly constructed crow quilled confession of my spirit to all of you,
black waterproof ink scars the board, so hot-pressed, pristine and pure.
A slowly constructed manifestation of to tremble,
as base as a bridge in a song and less like the poem that I promised you.
Nothing's so lurid as haiku-detat on sidewalks in white outlined chalk,
all I've got is this ink smeared lines.
With our voices in harmony, the offering, of a crow quilled threnody.
Try and guess what kind of music it is.

Suzanne-Leonard Cohen

This song gave me a new perspective on who or what jesus actually was, aswell as that whole God thing.

Suzanne takes you down to her place near the river
You can hear the boats go by
You can spend the night beside her
And you know that she's half crazy
But that's why you want to be there
And she feeds you tea and oranges
That come all the way from China
And just when you mean to tell her
That you have no love to give her
Then she gets you on her wavelength
And she lets the river answer
That you've always been her lover
And you want to travel with her
And you want to travel blind
And you know that she will trust you
For you've touched her perfect body with your mind.

And Jesus was a sailor
When he walked upon the water
And he spent a long time watching
From his lonely wooden tower
And when he knew for certain
Only drowning men could see him
He said "All men will be sailors then
Until the sea shall free them"
But he himself was broken
Long before the sky would open
Forsaken, almost human
He sank beneath your wisdom like a stone
And you want to travel with him
And you want to travel blind
And you think maybe you'll trust him
For he's touched your perfect body with his mind.

Now Suzanne takes your hand
And she leads you to the river
She is wearing rags and feathers
From Salvation Army counters
And the sun pours down like honey
On our lady of the harbour
And she shows you where to look
Among the garbage and the flowers
There are heroes in the seaweed
There are children in the morning
They are leaning out for love
And they will lean that way forever
While Suzanne holds the mirror
And you want to travel with her
And you want to travel blind
And you know that you can trust her
For she's touched your perfect body with her mind.

Oh yeah, The Dresden Dolls are amazing. Their lyrics drive me insane in a good way. Hah.

On topic. Speaking of drive-insane-lyrics, Radiohead is the key to confuse and amaze me every single time. Thom Yorke, one of my favourite lyricists ever. And Rob Thomas is superior as well. And plenty of others.

I'm really loving the lyrics of "Tear You Apart" by She Wants Revenge. Major mood swings in the song when listened to. I have those kinds of mood swings so I completely relate.

I can't say about the lyrics for these singers/bands (they're in a different language), but I like songs by L'Arc~En~Ciel and Nami Tamaki.

Nami Tamaki's "Shining Star" is very upbeat and the music videos are great.

L'Arc~En~Ciel's songs are just cool, also. I believe their songs are of the rock genre.

Ween has some of the most delirious lyrics. I adore the band because it is quirky, anti-uniform, and entirely experimental. Picture a mad scientist who wants to liquify morality and mix it into different bottles (ooh, story idea?) to create complete mayhem. That's Ween's music.

My favorite lyrics of theirs:

"Mutilated Lips"

I lick my brain in silence...
Rather squeeze my head instead.
Midget man provoking violence.
Listen not to what I said.

I said please calm it down,
everything is turning brown.

Mutilated lips give a kiss on the wrist
of the worm-like tips of tentacles expanding
in my mind, I'm fine, accepting only fresh brine -
you can get another drop of this, yeah you wish...
[repeat]

Laughing lady living lover:
ooh, you sassy frassy lassie,
Find me the skull of Haile Sellase, I...
Give me shoes so I can tapsie.
Tap all over this big world.
Take my hand, you ugly girl...

[chorus]

Despite the negative stereotype toward rap lyrics, there are some good and meaningful lyrics. Here's one that I've always loved:

Outkast - Humble Mumble
Back on the microphone, your number one controller
I rock the microphone like a blizzard;
I'm so cold I'm tryin' to hold ya
Life is like a great big roller coaster
Everything in life don't happen like it's suppose to
Trials and tribulations make you stronger live longer
You wanna reach the nation nigga start from ya corner
Everything in life don't always happen like you plan it
Demand it; over stand it then you handle it
Fuck wishing you, you missing the ambition on your mission
Now you switching why you quitting 'cause it's heated in the kitchen
Sloppy slipping in your pimping nigga
You either pistol whoop the nigga or you choke the trigger
You've got to follow through, struggle to complete your dreams
"No Weapon Formed Agains Prospers" 54:17
From Isaiah lay a nigga down and spray 'em
If the dealer dealt a fucked up hand of cards you've gotta play 'em

The lyrics have more impact with the haunting acoustic guitar Neil Young put it with, and his singing doesnt hurt either, but I find specific refuge within "World On A String";

You know I lose, you know I win
You know I call for the shape I’m in.
It’s just a game you see me play,
Only real in the way
That I feel from day to day.

Although the answer is not unknown,
I’m searchin’, searchin’, and how I’ve grown.
It’s not all right to say goodbye,
And the world on a string
Doesn’t mean a thing.

No, the world on a string
Doesn’t mean a thing.
It’s only real in the way
That I feel from day to day.
No, the world on a string
Doesn’t mean a thing.

I like lyrics from many bands, but two that generally always manage to touch me with every song would probably be Rise Against, and 3 Doors Down.

This is one of my favorites. Geoff (writer) wrote it about his friend who he had gotten into a fight and didn't talk to him for a year. His friend was about to reach a better position in his life, and he is then killed.

steps ascend to a loaded gun.
the scent of matches hangs in the air
(a lit one flickers out in a hearbeat).
we don't want to see this:
a flash of light that's letting go
of an empty bullet case,
by the time it hits the ground,
he's out of reach. (let go, let go.)
out of reach. (let go, let go.)
out of reach. (let go, let go.)
out of reach. (let go, let go.)
out of reach

the wolves are closing in.
there's no room left to make amends, but
do you remember when we'd fly that kite so high?
all the time we've wasted,
spent fighting,
will burn
in the fire of our regrets
all the time we've wasted,
spent fighting,
it's blood
and it's running down the stairs.

freeze the frame
between the gun shot and the hole it makes.
a spinning bullet hangs in the middle.
there's no way to stop it,
it will surely hit the mark
you can try to understand
but I'm giving up.
giving up.
giving up.
the synapse fires, it's right in time.
I'm giving up.
giving up.
giving up.
this should always stay
out of reach. (let go, let go.)
out of reach. (let go, let go.)
out of reach. (let go, let go.)
out of reach. (let go, let go.)

the wolves are closing in.
there's no room left to make amends, but
do you remember when we'd fly that kite so high?
all the time we've wasted,
spent fighting,
will burn
in the fire of our regrets
all the time we've wasted,
spent fighting,
it's blood
and it's running down the stairs.

I ran down the stairs
and into the garden,
put both my hands into the soil.
in the spring,
you will bloom,
like her heart,
through the blouse,
in the back of the ambulance,
as it turned and turned down the street
(one more turn won't you come back to me?)
as it turned on its red lights,
you were turning into
red roses
red roses
red roses
red roses
but I'm not giving up.

I LOVE The Patriot Game

Come all ye young rebels, and list while I sing,
For the love of one's country is a terrible thing.
It banishes fear with the speed of a flame,
And it makes us all part of the patriot game.

My name is O'Hanlon, and I've just turned sixteen.
My home is in Monaghan, and where I was weaned
I learned all my life cruel England's to blame,
So now I am part of the patriot game.

This Ireland of ours has too long been half free.
Six counties lie under John Bull's tyranny.
But still De Valera is greatly to blame
For shirking his part in the Patriot game.

They told me how Connolly was shot in his chair,
His wounds from the fighting all bloody and bare.
His fine body twisted, all battered and lame
They soon made me part of the patriot game.

It's nearly two years since I wandered away
With the local battalion of the bold IRA,
For I read of our heroes, and wanted the same
To play out my part in the patriot game.

I don't mind a bit if I shoot down police
They are lackeys for war never guardians of peace
And yet at deserters I'm never let aim
The rebels who sold out the patriot game

And now as I lie here, my body all holes
I think of those traitors who bargained in souls
And I wish that my rifle had given the same
To those Quislings who sold out the patriot game.

Allocating people for ? ? ?
The methods of the summons are dastardly
Try to cleanse the hands of the murdering
But the advantage of guilt is lingering

Shadows of soldier lay nearby
The dead ones finally reach a compromise
Destruction of war lies in bosnia
The destruction of war lies in bosnia

One of my several favorite artists, and one of my favorite songs.

Bob Dylan
Masters of War

Come you masters of war
You that build all the guns
You that build the death planes
You that build the big bombs
You that hide behind walls
You that hide behind desks
I just want you to know
I can see through your masks

You that never done nothin'
But build to destroy
You play with my world
Like it's your little toy
You put a gun in my hand
And you hide from my eyes
And you turn and run farther
When the fast bullets fly

Like Judas of old
You lie and deceive
A world war can be won
You want me to believe
But I see through your eyes
And I see through your brain
Like I see through the water
That runs down my drain

You fasten all the triggers
For the others to fire
Then you set back and watch
When the death count gets higher
You hide in your mansion
While the young people's blood
Flows out of their bodies
And is buried in the mud

You've thrown the worst fear
That can ever be hurled
Fear to bring children
Into the world
For threatening my baby
Unborn and unnamed
You ain't worth the blood
That runs in your veins

How much do I know
To talk out of turn
You might say that I'm young
You might say I'm unlearned
But there's one thing I know
Though I'm younger than you
Even Jesus would never
Forgive what you do

Let me ask you one question
Is your money that good
Will it buy you forgiveness
Do you think that it could
I think you will find
When your death takes its toll
All the money you made
Will never buy back your soul

And I hope that you die
And your death'll come soon
I will follow your casket
In the pale afternoon
And I'll watch while you're lowered
Down to your deathbed
And I'll stand o'er your grave
'Til I'm sure that you're dead
-----------

I think you will find
When your death takes its toll
All the money you made
Will never buy back your soul

Your favorite lyrics from a song.

Share lyrics here that are meaningfull to you. List the song and artist for each segment of lyrics you show.

I'll start off by sharing lyrics that I find emotionaly touching.

3 Doors Down
"Be Somebody"

The shades gone up
Mothers staring down
She don't know where he's been
Or how long he's been out

She said 'Boy I'm tired of waiting up while your out with your friends'
He said 'Mom I'm trying and I'm living my life the best way that I can'

Cause I'm trying to be somebody
I'm not trying to be somebody else
This life is mine I'm living
Don't you know me? I wont ever let you down

The day has come
The sun is moving on
She don't know where he'll go
Or when he's coming home

She said 'Son take care, don't let your dreams get too far out of sight'
He said 'I love you now, don't worry about me you know I'll be fine'

Cause I'm trying to be somebody
I'm not trying to be somebody else
This life is mine I'm living
Don't you know me? I wont ever let you down
No
I'm not trying to be somebody else
Don't you know me? I wont ever let you
I wont ever let you

What they say
What they know
What they think wont ever bring me down
This life is mine and I am my own

I'm trying to be somebody
I'm not trying to be somebody else
This life is mine I lead
Don't you know me?

I'm trying to be somebody
I'm not trying to be somebody else
This life is mine I'm living
Don't you know me? I wont ever let you down
Yeahhh
I'm not trying to be somebody else
Don't you know me? I wont ever let you down
I wont be nobody else
This life is mine and I am my own

Closing Time by Leonard Cohen

Personally, the most brilliant song I have ever heard. My favorite refrain:

Yeah we're drinking and we're dancing
but there's nothing really happening
and the place is dead as Heaven on a Saturday night
And my very close companion
gets me fumbling gets me laughing
she's a hundred but she's wearing
something tight
and I lift my glass to the Awful Truth
which you can't reveal to the Ears of Youth
except to say it isn't worth a dime
And the whole damn place goes crazy twice
and it's once for the devil and once for Christ
but the Boss don't like these dizzy heights
we're busted in the blinding lights,
busted in the blinding lights
of closing time.

There's a lot of songs I like for their lyrics but most of them I can't think of right now... I don't know why but I've always loved this song:

Motorcycle Drive-by - Third Eye Blind

Summertime and the wind is blowing outside in lower Chelsea
And I dont know what I'm doing in this city
The sun is always in my eyes
It crashes through the windows and I'm sleeping on the couch
When I came to visit you
That's when I knew that I could never have you
I knew that before you did
Still I'm the one who's stupid
And there's this burning like there's always been
I've never been so alone, and I've never been so alive.

Visions of you on a motorcycle drive by,
The cigarette ash flies in your eyes, and you don't mind, you smile,
And say the world doesn't fit with you.
I don't believe you, you're so serene.
Careening through the universe, your axis on a tilt, you're guiltless and free,
I hope you take a piece of me with you,
And there's things I would like to do that you don't believe in,
I would like to build something, but you'd never see it happen
And there's this burning, like there's always been,
I've never been so alone, and I've, never been so alive.
And there's this burning...

Where's the soul, I want to know, New York City's evil.
The surface is everything, but I could never do that,
Someone would see through that.
And this is the last time we'll be friends again.
And I'll get over you, you'll wonder who I am
And there's this burning, just like there's always been,
I've never been so alone, alone, and I've never been so alive

I go home to the coast, it starts to rain, I paddle out on the water alone,
Taste the salt and taste the pain. I'm not thinking of you again,
Summer dies and swells rise, the sun goes down in my eyes, see this rolling wave, darkly coming to take me, home,
And I've never been so alone, and I've never been so alive.
