On my other thread a couple folks have said why they write and I thought it might make a fun thread.

...I want recognition, approval and money, probably in that order.

P.S. I'd add that I want the satisfaction from knowing I've entertained someone for a while or provided a distraction or maybe given them pause to think about something a little differently; or otherwise knowing I've made them feel like reading my work was worth their time. That's probably an extension or variation of "approval."

I write because I can be a jerk without being physically injured during the ... ahem ... appreciation phase of an audience's reactions.

("...I guess I write because it's all a chase to me..." smiled the goblin who in his anonymity could never aspire to anything external now, then adding "...and rather an odd chase too, one in which one is trying to catch an elusive creature in front of one with one's pen while trying to outpace those readers who are hopefully following from behind...", and as long as it remained a chase the goblin felt he was at least advancing in his writings still)

I think the first two sentences in my signature say it best. I write because I learned from personal experience that entertainment is the most powerful teacher that exists. I learned much more from commercial fiction than those who "taught" as a living. So to continue the legacy I want to pick up the torch aware of the impact my stories (I hope) will have.

I see. I have a niece and nephew that are more like cousins, since we are so close in age. In fact, they always called me by my name only.

I prefer to keep my ancestral relatives in the closet. I want to be judged on my own merit, or fault, only.

But there are no writers that I know of in my family. Much to my parents chagrin, I deviated from the straight and narrow path they envisioned their children all following.

...because I want to kid myself I can still do it and because I think a fictionalised version of my memoirs will make a good book.

I'd say me too, but I do love to brag about famous writers in my family (not that he could help me get published, he died 200 years ago).

But, back on topic, I write because otherwise I'm not quite sure where all these ideas flying around in my head would go.

I've been thinking about this for a while and while I want fame, money and a career as a writer, I actually write because I am compelled to and I'm miserable when I don't. I figure in that case I might as well have fame, money and a career.

I like being able to recount the happenings and going-ons that matter in life.

I want to put in writing- exactly what life has done to me.

Rememory, memory, or exercise

I write to exercise the right to free speech, the freedom every single soldier has ever fought to protect.

As my WO once said - people that can't stand that right of free speech, who complain because they don't like what they hear, should move to some other country better suited for them where freedom of speech is but a pipe dream.
