I find my own writing to be choppy and amateurish, until I cast a real person in the role. Then the "actor" plays the part of the character and contributes to the dialogue and actions of the character.
I also find myself unable to get clear or specific appearances down until I see or find a real person who fits the appearance and character I'm looking for. Otherwise I almost never can fully describe in detail a character's appearance.
