Readin' Buke's "Ham on Rye"

talkin' 'bout his father
and his father's anger

rememberin' my father
and his anger

like the time my brother and I
got expelled from boarding school
for fightin' in self defense

he picked us up in his station wagon
me in the front seat
brother in the back

drove to a nearby parking lot
parked

lookin' straight ahead
he started yellin'
punctuatin' his points
by backhandin' the left side
of my jaw

(just my luck
he was a right hander)

after half an hour or so
started to feel a molar loosen
as I continued to swallow blood

sure glad my seat belt was on

without it I could have been
seriously injured

Is this true?

If you knew in advance he was a right hander you should have had the appropriate guard up and hooked him with a left then a straight right. It's a science.

Anyhow, it was a nice slice of life between a father and a son.

I was 12. Arms were too short for a tag.

It is indeed 'a science'. A very sweet one (thank you, Pierce Egan).

Don't feel bad. My father jacked my jaw in my senior year of high school. He didn't like my hair.

Feel bad? Au contraire, buyu. From experiences such as this I have learned how to take a hit, give as good as I get and, most importantly, choose my dance partners wisely.

Ha.
I had forgotten about this one.

And I had forgotten the event (although now it is as fresh in my mind as if it happened an hour ago).

Odd how the other two people in that car that day no longer walk the face of the earth and the only person for who this story is real is me.

Hmmm.
Writin' sure is a mysterious form of reality.
